In Burgundy the classification is drawn plot by plot. In Champagne it rates entire villages. The echelle des crus, formalized in 1919, scored communes on a percentage scale that set grape prices, with seventeen villages sitting at 100 percent and roughly forty four premier crus between 90 and 99.
